How a crew is organised on a large Wetherill Park industrial site

Four people on a large floor need areas assigned, equipment allocated and a sequence agreed, or they will cover the convenient parts of the building twice and the far end not at all. That coordination is a role somebody has to hold. Ask who does, and whether that person cleans as well as leads, since both arrangements work and they produce different results and both should be stated in the proposal rather than settled on the night.

Ask how areas are divided. Fixed zones give each cleaner ownership and make a shortfall traceable to a person and a place. Rotating zones spread the unpleasant work and reduce familiarity. Either is defensible. What matters is that a division exists and is written down, because an undivided crew produces exactly the uneven coverage that large sites complain about and nobody can say afterwards which part of the floor was whose.

Ask what the leading hand is responsible for: assigning areas, checking completion, holding the keys, reporting exceptions, or all of those. Ask whether they have authority to change the sequence when something is unavailable. A leading hand with responsibility and no authority produces delays, since every deviation waits for somebody who is not in the building and the deferred work is rarely picked up afterwards.

Ask how you contact them. On a large site the person leading the crew is the practical contact for anything happening that night, and having a working number for them is worth more than a general office line after hours. Agree that during mobilisation rather than discovering during an incident that nobody on site can be reached directly and to establish who else can be reached if that person is unavailable.

When one of four cleaners is absent, something has to give. Ask what the provider does: bring a replacement, work short and defer a zone, or extend the shift. All three happen and each has consequences you should know about in advance. What you want to avoid is a short crew silently covering less ground with nobody recording which areas were affected and by then several weeks of uneven coverage have already occurred.

Ask for deferred zones to be reported. A short note saying which area was not reached and when it will be covered turns an unavoidable staffing problem into a managed one. Without it, the pattern is invisible until somebody walks the far end of the building and finds an area that has plainly been missed several times running and the provider is left explaining a pattern rather than a single night.
